What is Somatic Experiencing?

Somatic Experiencing® (SE) is a body-based therapeutic approach founded by Dr Peter Levine and designed to support the healing of stress, shock, and trauma held within the body and nervous system. It gently works with the body’s natural rhythms and processes to restore balance, safety, and connection. â€‹

From an SE perspective, trauma is not defined by the event itself, but by the lasting imprint it leaves on the nervous system. When our physiology becomes stuck in cycles of fight, flight, freeze fawn or collapse, we may experience symptoms such as anxiety, shutdown, chronic tension, or emotional overwhelm. SE helps the body renegotiate these patterns, guiding us toward release, integration, resilience, greater aliveness and embodiment.
